Mark’s Story: Better Sleep = More Weight Loss

Mark, a forty-year-old schoolteacher, came to me for help losing weight. He had prediabetes and high blood pressure, which he was taking a diuretic for. Mark knew he had to lose weight, but he lacked energy. We worked on a few nutrition and exercise habits, but his weight didn’t budge. He admitted he was only doing them about half of the time.

We checked Mark’s thyroid and testosterone, and both were normal, though his testosterone was a little low. I suggested he do a sleep study because I was nearly certain he had obstructive sleep apnea. He admitted to snoring and sometimes gasping for air while sleeping; plus, his neck was nineteen inches around, and he was visibly tired all of the time. He could barely write his lesson plans without falling asleep at home.

Mark didn’t want to do the sleep study because he didn’t want to spend the night attached to a bunch of wires with people watching him. On top, he said that even if he had sleep apnea, he wouldn’t wear the CPAP machine.

I bargained with him, and promised that even if he need the CPAP machine, I could eventually get him off it. This was a gamble on my part because not everyone who loses weight can stop using a CPAP machine, but I needed a Hail Mary at the time.

Mark had severe sleep apnea, and the doctor prescribed a CPAP machine. Within a month, he came in looking like a new man. He said his energy had improved fivefold, and with that energy, he was able to work on nutrition and exercise. His weight started coming down quickly. He lost fifty pounds within six months, and his CPAP was adjusted to a lower level. His testosterone has increased again, and he’s still working to eliminate the need for the CPAP entirely, but he is thankful that he decided to get it.
